It's Good to be Queen

While I do love the Thrill of the Hunt when it comes to finding a good deal-or doing anything to save money on a purchase, there is a reality of my privilege that I should mention to initially level-set what I am able to do:  I have the luxury of time, and I have the luxury of money.  Let me explain-as it's worth the reality check to understand my perspective and provide a level of transparency on who I am and what I do from the beginning.

Time

I retired a year ago.  I'm young by most standards, but between not having children (the biggest money saving tip I can ever give-and I say this with no judgement), and doing the very thing this blog is about (saving money on as much as possible-or said another way, spending as little money as possible whenever I do spend money), I now have the luxury of time on my side to spend my days looking for the best price, the best deal, the best coupon...or finding new ways to save on the purchases I make. ..and for this, I'm incredibly lucky.

In transparency, I don't mean that I spend 10 hours each day doing this, but I do have regularly scheduled (quite literally-I regularly schedule spending reviews...more on this in a later post) time each week to review purchases to find better deals, seek out new coupons, and play the games I play to save what I save.  Not everyone has this luxury-sometimes, the purchase has to happen quickly.  That happens in my life too-but, when I can take the time to do what I do, that is when the magic happens.

Money

I'm not rich.  Not even close. Not close to the 1%-or the 2%.  Maybe the 5%, but probably only when the wind blows a certain way!  But, I do have enough money that allows me to play some of the games I play without it impacting my ability to otherwise spend how and when I want (all within reason, of course!).

Said another way, some of the games I play may mean that I have the same purchase (usually for hotel rooms) made multiple times on multiple websites and I'm waiting it out to see where the better/future discount may surface.  As a result, I may have a double or triple charge for the same thing on my credit card for several months that I've paid for-only eventually to cancel down to just the one charge that I end up using (and that ends up being the best deal).   Not everyone has the luxury of allowing an additional $300, $1000, etc...of expenses to hit a credit card (and be paid off) without causing pain, so having some extra money to play the games that I do, is certainly a benefit that I recognize not everyone has.  Most (truly, 90%) of my tricks don't involve multiple charges on a credit card-but, some of my largest savings plays do come from doing this.

Whenever I eventually dig further into the hotel charge play a bit more or really, any of the tips or tricks I share, please know that your own optics and limits (credit, income, time, etc...) are for you to decide-and for you to establish your own limits and boundaries.  My experience of what works for me are just those that relate to my situation.  But, I'm always game to work with anyone to find the bespoke game that works for *you*.

Welcome to Queen of the Discount!

Welcome to my blog, Queen of the Discount! Why 'Queen of the Discount?' you ask?  Two reasons. First: I love a discount.  Who doesn't, right?  But, I mean I *REALLY* love a discount.  To me, getting a good discount on an expense-whether it's a discretionary purchase (like clothing or travel) or even a regular, household bill (like Energy or a household repair)- is like a sport, a hobby, a dance, a thrill-ride, and a passion all rolled into one.  And, second:  I used to work in a profession that regularly created and amplified discounts for the consumers of the brands I worked for.  ...and I loved my job.  Doing this professionally allowed me to see the 'other side' of online couponing/cash back/discount website operations, and I learned a lot in the process. I know the games that brands-and deal and discount sites play because I played those very games. This knowledge is something I've applied to my regular life, and the rest as they say is histor...

Credit Cards: When the Fees are Worth It

With the Super Bowl two weeks away, it's time to turn to that next American tradition:  Tax Season! Kidding. If, like me Tax Season is not your favorite American tradition-especially if you end up owing taxes, I feel your pain. ...and I have a suggestion you may want to consider if that is where you find yourself in the run-up to April 15:  Pay the taxes you owe with your Credit Card.  Not Kidding. It's crazy, I know.  But, bear with me.  As 70%+ of Americans have a credit card that pays some time of reward (cash back, points, etc...), this knowledge drop is for most anyone reading this post. If you're going to keep reading, there are two things you MUST do to make this play pay-off:  1.  You have to read the fine print on the IRS website to understand what the fee will be for your taxes owed to be paid by credit card and 2.  You have to read the fine print of your Credit Card to *accurately* calculate what the rewards/cash back will be on t...

Grocery Shopping Online

Like many of you, I started going my grocery shopping online during the 'Covid years'...and I personally haven't stopped doing my grocery shopping online since!  I found the time savings of the shopping itself to be considerable-no more walking the isles with my grocery list (a massive $$ saver!!!), no more standing in line to check out, no more circling the parking lot when I arrive trying to find a halfway decent parking space. This probably all saves me an average of 30 minutes every time I do a grocery shop--and certainly time IS money.   In addition to this time savings however is another substantial benefit that I've come to realize:  No more impulse buying!  No more buying because I'm hungry or have a craving, no more buying because the display looked cute.  No more buying because there was a tasty free sample.  None of it.  Now, I shop the digital coupons to see what I can save for what is on my list, shop what's on my list-plus any additi...
